I really wanted to like this

A mutual of mine from twitter showed this to me and I was initially very interested, Recoil looked like it had everything I wanted in a comic! I was pretty excited. It looked like it had a lot of potential, and after an initial read I feel it does indeed have potential but there are a few glaring flaws that keep me from getting immersed and I believe will keep it from breaking into the "mainstream" (something like Ava's Demon kind of mainstream).

Firstly the art style is very... It's not bad, there is obvious artistic skill, but it is just not appealing? It's not aesthetically pleasing and looks to me like the cartoons you see now-a-days that don't look good almost on purpose. I feel like this is a massive roadblock, as art style is 50% of the draw to a comic, we eat with our eyes first and I could see people who would enjoy the story probably pass it up due to the design. The characters come off as not really cartoony but not realistic and are sitting in this middle-ground of meh or downright 'ugly'. Actually the cutest art is when the characters go into an offmodel state, I particularly love the offmodel chibi cute Kalo on page 40.

The pacing is another problem. I can tell this has a big story to tell and is going for the long game but the problem with that is it can easily burn out anyone's interest. At best it feels unfulfilling to read and at worst it is a downright slog. Which is a shame with such a neat premise. It's very thick to get into and not very new reader friendly.
The writing also feels a little juvenile, again, it has a very nice premise and seems like there is a story here to tell but whether or not it's a good one still isn't clear. Is this story going to be new and interesting enough to become something? Or is it going to be a cliche storm? I might keep checking on it to see if something blows my mind but right now everything feels very middle of the road.

I didn't come here to rain on your parade, I came here with the intention to enjoy something but was left with a blandness in my mouth. You obviously have potential and perhaps practice and growth will turn this comic into something great.

@animusosity : wow, this is one of the rudest things I have ever come across. Have you ever heard the phrase "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all?" If a friend recommended it to you, maybe you should reserve your rude comments for them, or if you do feel an overwhelming need to tell a creator you don't enjoy their work, at least be constructive.

@animusosity : i have absolutely no idea what kind of person you must be to leave a comment like this?? if you dont enjoy something, leave and carry on with your day. this is the kind of thing you keep to yourself, not callously say to a creator.

@animusosity : wow, really? what the hell possessed you to leave such a nasty, unneeded comment? i get not liking something, and it's fine if it's not to your tastes, but there is absolutely NO reason to tell that to someone in this way. the ONLY possible thing this will gain is making the creator feel bad, which is a pretty awful thing to do??

a helpful tip for the next time you're thinking of leaving a comment like this: DON'T.

I love how her hair has been growing longer over the course of the comic

I ~sort of~ understand the idea of doing blood tests when a person is being treated for unrelated mental issues but I'm afraid of needles and this GETS TO ME SO MUCH. They want your blood EVERY BLOODY TIME. Come on, let's already settle on my problems being in my head, how long can it take??

Moaning about mental health services aside, I adore the noodlekid. <3

That ... Is not a health test. That is an experiment. I'm seriously not okay with how this facility is run. I'm curious to see where they end up should someone come along (a certain purple-haired someone, perhaps) who doesn't take their nonsense and swallow it whole.
